Today we might look at these images and think that the men in the photographs must have been gay. Researchers found that in the 19th century men openly showed affection for each other in ways that are not deemed acceptable in modern times. Some of these men were off to war and wanted to record this emotional time with their buddies. What the camera captured is true brotherhood. Maybe we can’t go back to that time, but we can work on not being so afraid of expressing affection. Every man needs brotherly hugs and support.
